Blogging is dependent on audience
The idea of working as a blogger is amazing and a lot of people think so too, but if you’re going to be making money, you’re going to need to have an audience. This makes reaching your audience the first step, and the best way to do that is to find the value proposition, and purpose of your blog.Value proposition, is simply the goal of your blog. Why does your blog exist? What are you trying to achieve with the blog? For example, you want to help entrepreneurs get ready for what business has to offer. That’s your value proposition and purpose.Narrowing it down even more, let’s say it’s not all entrepreneurs you write for. Maybe your audience is female entrepreneurs who are trying to break into male dominated trades. After identifying your target audience, the next thing to consider is how you want to affect your audience’s lives. What kind of change are you trying to bring on? To do this, you can use a DOC (Driver of Change) model. This is simply thinking about the situations of your prospective readers and what should happen after they come in contact with your content. What do you want to change after they take your advice? So essentially you are concerned with three things; the situation your readers are in, how they feel, and what they think. The perfect example is the author of this book. Her readers were unable to find ideas for their blogs before she published her work. They were confused and demoralized. However after they read her work and put her advice into action, they became motivated and optimistic and better at focusing time and efforts. The next piece of advice is figuring out the steps to help you enact change in the way your readers think and feel about your chosen blog subject. These steps or categories are called buckets, and there can be up to seven of them. So, say your purpose is helping students survive college, you could have blog buckets like, “time management”, “the importance of sleep” and “saying no to procrastination”.

Learn all you can about your readers
Whether it’s a love interest or a new boss, it has never hurt to know what a person likes when you are trying to impress them. This also applies to your readers. If you are confused about what you need to find out, then think about what you know about people who are close to you. Like your friends. Do you know what makes them smile? What makes them tick? What their dreams are? These are the things you should find out about your readers. This way you don’t have to beat around the bush, and will be able to talk to them directly without wondering if they relate to or like your content. The easiest way to get to know your readers is to find blogs, or other media, with content similar to yours and browse through the comment section to see what viewers and readers are saying. They give out their desires, aims and fears right there in the comments. The author also used this method. After going through blogs that offered content like she did, she was able to see that the audience of freelancers and bloggers were having trouble getting audience themselves, and were worried they’d never get people interested in their own content. You could also do something of a survey by writing your blog posts with open-ended questions that would make readers want to respond. Try to always use questions that require explanatory and well expressed answers. Avoid questions that can be answered in the simple affirmative or negative if you want to get a conversation going. For example instead of, “are you worried about the rising gun crime rates?” try “What do you think about the current gun crime rates?”Now that you know your readers, we can focus on creating good content.
