first KEY POINT
Have you ever been in dire straits, thinking that the world intentionally throws adverse events at you? Happiness seemed impossible during these periods. But what if you have more control over your feelings than you think?Dr. Dyer stated that happiness is within you and comes from the way you think. Therefore, you should change your perception to attain true contentment. For instance, do you believe you can only achieve happiness by accomplishing something? Unfortunately, if you continue to search for it externally, you’ll never catch it entirely.Things like a delicious dish, a luxurious car, or a spacious house can bring happiness, but only temporarily. Relying on someone else or an off-chance to be responsible for your emotions is not a practical choice either. Many people blame others for the way they feel. You often hear, “They upset me” or “They made me angry.” Yet, the people themselves allowed someone’s actions or words to arouse these emotions.
Instead, how about acquiring a new belief — that being happy is a choice? Dr. Dyer learned this from his own experience. Living in an orphanage and foster homes for years, he strived to transform these days into a positive experience for his brother, himself, and all kids around. In his early years, he decided to be happy; from then on, nothing could break his commitment.
In the next few minutes, you will learn how to turn your beliefs into your most loyal allies in achieving happiness. Ready for this spectacular journey inside yourself? Let’s get started!
second KEY POINT
Dr. Dyer singled out three types of people. The first one often feels pain and tension while facing challenges, constantly searching for something but rarely finding it. The second type is more relaxed but always falls short of where it wants to be. It leads to frustration and annoyance. However, the third one has no limits. These people find the motivation inside them and don’t seek validation from outside influences. They place no limits on what they’re capable of and make the very best of what they have.Additionally, the third type has developed an ability to generate happiness. How? They can transform most situations into “peak experiences.” The latter means flow, total immersion in what you are doing, living here and now. Flow occurs when you do something enjoyable naturally, but it needs training in case of mundane tasks. For instance, how can you have a “peak experience” while queuing in a supermarket? The answer is to change the focus of your attention. For example, try looking around the store rather than waiting for a customer to pay before you. The joyful child near you or an elderly lady who stops by for groceries after her evening jog can evoke many emotions. If you often get into traffic jams, take advantage of that period to do something helpful. Responding to emails, planning the weekend, or listening to a podcast on well-being are just a few options. You can even learn a new language while commuting. Consider it time for yourself. You might also benefit from another principle — thoughts affect feelings. Indeed, you have noticed it by yourself. Recall situations when you enjoyed listening to your friends. Suddenly they said something that brought to your mind some bad memories, and your mood changed. The good news is you can control and use your thoughts to evoke positive emotions. For instance, what about creating a “bank” of lovely memories to replay when bored or irritated? Managing your feelings is worth learning. The first step is to identify the type you are right now and then vow to work towards being a zero-limits person. The choice is yours.
