first KEY POINT

Appreciating the unique traits of HSPs

Highly sensitive persons (HSPs) are people who often mistake their unique traits for being crazy. HSPs are those who pay extra attention consciously or subconsciously to their environment and situation. Many HSPs believe that they are very odd and act crazy because society has labeled them so. HSPs take in a lot — they are affected by things that seem reasonable to other people, like sound, light, noise, etc.

These traits of sensitivity make HSPs conscious of other people's behavior, which might make them unable to tolerate others.

There are two facts to remember when defining HSPs:• Fact 1: Everyone, HSP or not, feels best when they are neither too bored nor too aroused. The best state of mind to perform any task is when you're not too bored or too aroused. You have to be balanced emotionally to achieve the best results.
• Fact 2: Individuals display significant variance in the level of stimulation their nervous system experiences in identical scenarios. Reactions are not sacrosanct to a particular problem — people react differently to the same conditions and stimulation.Since HSPs pay more attention to details, they tend to know more than the average sensitive person. Their attention to detail is an advantage to their knowledge, but it also means that they get irritated quickly and are more prone to frustration. HSPs respond to false alarms because their sensitivity is always on high alert. They are easily stimulated, thereby making them somewhat insecure in society.Stimulation is what gets your attention and propels you to react. You can't control your stimulation because it can come from anywhere. If you're affected by loud music, and your neighbor loves loud music, there's little you can do to control the volume of his music without really invading his privacy. The stimulation causes arousal, but a lot of people mistake arousal for fear. Arousal may appear in any form of feelings other than fear. You should notice your arousal so that you don't wrongly label it as fear.

Stimulation varies in intensity, which means the output can go from small to big, depending on the reaction.

second KEY POINT

How human sensitivity manifests in various individuals

High sensitivity can be hereditary as well as developed, as shown by numerous studies. As an HSP, you should accept your traits as positive — a part of your identity that is not something to be ashamed of.Some of the traits which HSPs possess are:• Excel at identifying mistakes and preventing their occurrence
• Highly conscientious
• Possess a capacity for intense focus
• Especially good at tasks
• Able to learn subconsciously.Charles, one of Elaine's HSP patients, revealed that he has learned to accept his traits and live with them comfortably. In his perspective, “consistently exposing yourself to the world is vital — don't be afraid of your sensitivity.”Two fraternal twins, Rob and Rebecca, were observed from birth by Elaine. She discovered that Rob was highly sensitive while Rebecca was not. Rob's sensitivity made him have trouble sleeping since he was a baby. He would wake up at intervals and have difficulty going back to sleep again. It also made him curious about a lot of things, noticing changes no matter how little. Medical examination of HSPs has shown that they have slightly different body mechanisms than those who are not HSP.
