first KEY POINT
Trees aren’t seen as the most intelligent creatures; they don’t come off as social beings either. But studies have shown that trees talk to each other through a series of roots and a fungal network around the root tips that facilitate nutrient exchange. Trees use this to support each other; they form a lasting and symbiotic relationship solely responsible for the longevity that trees enjoy.
About 20 years ago, Peter Wohlleben began to organize survival training and log-cabin tours for tourists. Then he built an old forest preserve and a location in the forest where individuals might be buried as an alternative to regular graveyards. Visitors were enchanted by crooked, gnarled trees that Wohlleben had previously written off because of their low commercial value.Walking with visitors, Wohlleben learned to pay attention to more than just the quality of the trees’ trunks. He began to notice bizarre root shapes, peculiar growth patterns, and mossy cushions on the bark. His love of nature was thus reignited. Suddenly, Wohlleben experienced an unexplainable epiphany with trees. Coincidentally, Aachen University (RWTH Aachen) began conducting regular scientific research programs in the forest he manages. Many questions were answered throughout this investigation, but many more arose.Wohlleben's life as a forester was once again thrilling. Every day in the forest was a new adventure for him, and this led to some unorthodox forest management techniques. When you know that trees feel pain and have memories, and that tree parents live alongside their children, you can no longer just cut them down and interrupt their lives with enormous machinery.By going through this summary, you are invited to share the joy trees can bring to humanity. And, who knows, perhaps on your next walk in the forest, you will discover for yourself wonders great and small.
second KEY POINT
Communication between trees is essential to warn the neighboring trees about dangers like insects and animals that wish to eat their leaves or bark. Unfortunately, the trees that are prey to insects and herbivores are isolated from the root network and don’t get a prior warning from the nearby trees. When trees struggle due to a lack of sunlight or other factors that cause the tree to weaken or wither, they have a sturdy support system that keeps them growing, albeit slowly. The trees naturally develop deep roots that stretch and connect to other trees.
