first KEY POINT
What is the greatest source of happiness? Do we feel it when we reach our goal after a long work day? Do we need external stimulants for enjoyment, or is this feeling always inside us?Humanity has been searching for answers to these questions throughout its existence. Considering the fact that each successive generation asks itself what happiness is — we still need to find the final solution. Many people feel unhappy because of work, family, or external circumstances they cannot predict. But the fact is that sometimes we become the cause of our unhappiness. This dilemma can affect our well-being, among many others: should we listen to what our heart wants or what our brain thinks is necessary? Unfortunately, trying to choose the best option can stimulate us to overthink. By increasing the perceived impact of such problems, we limit ourselves from being able to enjoy the small pleasures of everyday life.
We can also track the number of daily tasks we perform automatically. The more of them, the more often it seems that life is passing by because we are doing something boring and unnecessary. Of course, some of the tasks we do unconsciously are necessary and valuable, such as brushing our teeth, cleaning, and buying food. But if we also notice that we are performing the same work tasks that do not improve our skills or contribute to our career development, it is time to change something.
second KEY POINT
Sometimes life would be better without certain people, don’t you agree? They would not spoil your mood, prevent you from achieving your goals, or do bad things. But evolution shows that the ability to negotiate and coexist is humanity’s strong point. No one knows what would have happened to us if the first people left their tribes whenever things did not turn out how they wanted. We are social creatures and tend to copy the behavior and reactions of other people. Consequently, practicing altruism — treating others with respect and kindness — is both a conscious decision and a logical need. The worse people behave toward others, the more catastrophic the consequences of this chain reaction can be. For example, if someone frequently witnesses older people chastising the youth, they may consider this behavior the norm. This moment of normalizing negative behavior is very dangerous. We live in a world with enough resources to meet everyone's needs. Therefore, humiliation, threats, or limitation of opportunities for someone will only slow down society's development and spread further arrogance among its members.Conversely, supporting and helping others increases the total number of good deeds , positively impacting our overall collective and individual happiness. The invariable fact is that some people's actions and situations do not depend on your desire. They will continue to happen, and only upgrading your response will change their effect on you. This is why your interpretations of all events are so critical: they affect whether you will be unhappy and disappointed or accept the circumstances and move on.You can better understand your reactions if you imagine that your rational mind holds the reins and is trying to control the wild Elephant that it is riding on. The rider represents the rational part of humans, while the Elephant represents the emotional part. These two parts make up the human mind and control your life.
