first KEY POINT
Currently, 51 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases are released every single year. We need to get that down to as close to zero as possible. A hard task for sure, but one which shouldn’t be ignored. The more troubling news is that these gases are increasing in volume rather than decreasing. However, if we manage to achieve this huge task, we can avoid the very worst and potentially catastrophic effects of climate change. Stay as we are and we’re on course for a huge disaster.
To reach this huge aim, every country needs to pull together and we need to use the initiative we have, along with newly developed ones. Without this, the world is just going to keep getting hotter. In 2020 and early 2021, there has been a slight decrease in the amount of emitted gases, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Everything ground to a halt, yet the effect on the climate was minimal. This just goes to show that a huge effort is needed to avoid major disaster in the future.
second KEY POINT
Reducing emissions becomes harder still when you start to look at exactly what causes gases to be released into the atmosphere — almost everything! From the plastic brush you use to detangle your hair in the morning to the car you drive, the bread you ate for toast at breakfast to the machine you use to cut the grass in your garden. Almost everything either releases gases or produces gases at the production stage.
