first KEY POINT
Anxiety is a condition that causes feelings of worry or fear, and these feelings can disrupt an individual’s normal life. There are a few types of anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety, selective mutism, and medication–induced anxiety disorder, and specific phobias, such as agoraphobia.
Symptoms of anxiety include stress that’s out of proportion to the impact of an event and the inability to set aside worry and restlessness. Other prominent symptoms include:
• Nervousness.
• A sense of impending danger, panic, or doom.
• Increased heart rate.
• Hyperventilation.
• Sweating.
• Trembling.
• Feeling weak or tired.
• Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry.Anxiety is the body's natural response to stress; it’s a feeling of fear or apprehension about what’s to come. On the first day of school, going to a job interview, or giving a speech may cause most people to feel fearful and nervous.
The following chapters explore the concept of anxiety, its causes, and treatment. Many people work under anxiety triggers unknowingly, and Dr. Duff has weighed in on this issue and provided much insight needed to detect, manage, and realistically avoid the condition.
