Every one of us starts any activity as a beginner, and we're bound to stumble or fall when approaching a new skill or topic. Remember the first time you tried riding a bike? Those initial wobbles, the uncertainty, and perhaps even a scraped knee? But with time and persistence, you got the hang of it. The world becomes a well of opportunities whenever we learn something new. However, society has created this urgency to rush through the beginner stage. We often overlook its value and the richness it brings to our lives. This early stage, filled with discovery and wonder, becomes a fleeting moment. Yet, it's in these early moments that we truly discover ourselves and our capabilities.
While it's natural for children to learn constantly, adults find it more challenging. There's a stigma attached to adults learning something they “should” have known earlier. The world sometimes looks at adult beginners with a hint of skepticism, implying that learning gets more complicated as we age. But it's far from impossible! Picture a child immersed in learning a new language because they must communicate. Now, imagine if you had that same level of immersion and motivation in your adult life!Whenever we decide to learn, we give ourselves a chance to reinvent. It brings magic to our daily lives, showing us facets of ourselves we might have missed. So, why wait? Take a step, fall, pick yourself up, and gain experience. Because in learning new things, you might discover a new version of yourself.Let’s jump straight in!

Tom Vanderbilt had a straightforward ambition: to immerse himself in new skills, savoring the novelty and challenges of being an absolute beginner. With this vision in mind, he set a few guiding principles. The skills had to be completely alien to him, but they also needed to be something he could pursue in New York City.Furthermore, he wasn't on the hunt for activities that he could master overnight. While not overwhelmingly demanding, he searched for pursuits that would keep him engaged and foster growth over an extended period.Tom's initial foray into chess was multifaceted. It was a means to bond with his daughter, introducing her to the strategic world of pawns and checkmates. To facilitate their learning, he enlisted the help of a professional coach. However, he soon recognized that their joint sessions inadvertently stalled his daughter's progress. So, he chose to step aside, giving her the space to evolve and flourish. This strategy proved to be a wise move, as she picked up the game at an impressive pace and went on to dominate in competitions, ranking among the nation's top young female players.Vanderbilt's passion for the game, however, remained unabated. After a brief pause, he rekindled his interest, joining the US Chess Federation. Here, he found himself in a diverse arena, competing against opponents from all age groups, including prodigious children who, despite their age, were formidable players.
