Summary of The Sum of Us

4.8 . 4559 reviews

Short summary

Racism costs us as a society irrespective of our cultural background. While people of color have been on the receiving end of racism for generations, it is self-destructive to white people. In “The Sum of Us,” Heather McGhee provides evidence to prove that racism is anti-American and anti-human. She presents a roadmap for us to create a better future for everyone. Heather McGhee studied American Studies at Yale University. She designs and promotes solutions to inequality and racial injustice in America. “What would it be like to live in an America where we embraced diversity as our superpower? McGhee illustrates the power and necessity of multiracial organizing. ‘The Sum of Us’ makes the case for the radical notion that ‘we the people’ means all of us.” ~ Cecile Richards

Racism has been a tool that the elite use to widen inequality between them and the rest of us

Public opinion can be nasty. The majority of white Americans voted for Donald Trump because of the story sold to them about how the economy works. It didn’t matter what the facts said. A well-crafted lie was enough to get many people to vote along sentimental lines.
People’s underlying beliefs must change before any new policy to be effective.
Many white Americans see the presence of more people of color as a threat to their status. They are willing to block policies that could benefit them if they might also help people of color. Conservative media and politicians seeking division have entrenched the zero-sum paradigm in their minds. Those seeking unity have focused on how white people have benefited from systemic racism. Effectively, many white people saw race relations through the lens of competition instead of collaboration.
It is progressive economic conventional wisdom that racism accelerates inequality for communities of color, but what if racism is actually driving inequality for everyone? ~ Heather McGhee
“The Sum of Us” exposes the hidden costs of racism to everyone. The wealthy and powerful are gaining more wealth while most families struggle to stay out of debt. A tragic example is the coronavirus pandemic. By failing to protect Black, brown, and Indigenous lives, governments and corporations made everyone vulnerable. White people must realize that people of color do not share the zero-sum prism. Evidence shows that the civil rights victories in the South benefited the entire region by strengthening the local economy, encouraging infrastructural and educational investments in the area.

The zero-sum paradigm is counterproductive and false. People who have discovered this lie are reaping the solidarity dividend. These dividends are economical and moral benefits that those who embrace cross-racial solidarities are enjoying. College-educated and young white voters teamed up to end Donald Trump’s presidency despite pandemic and racial inequality concerns. Many white voters supported him, not minding the lies that cost over 200,000 Americans lives in one year.

If the story we have been told has got us here, we can create a new story that will create a better future for all of us. To get there, we must understand the cause of the problem and identify the forces sustaining it.
second key point

To uproot the zero-sum idea, we must first understand when and why it was planted

America’s birth is inseparably linked to the creation of a racial hierarchy. Racial hierarchy justified. They got the support of pseudo-scientists, explorers, clergy to justify their exploitation and enslavement of those they considered lesser humans.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
