first KEY POINT
Politics in the USA has always been divisive. There will always be significant differences of opinion between parties, and it’s impossible to please everyone with decisions made. Yet, we are living through a period of political change that seems dark and confusing to most. You could argue that life is going backward rather than forward. From rolling back women’s rights to cracking down hard on immigration, the state of the economy isn’t the only thing on the minds of American citizens.Jon Meacham has studied US history for years and has noticed many patterns that seem to repeat themselves time and time again. While the current situation may seem dark to many, the positive thing is that there have been dark times in the past, and they’ve always been conquered. Rather than allowing hate to divide and negativity to rule, Meacham suggests we look for lessons and make changes, focusing on hope and positivity instead. The four years that Donald Trump sat in office have created a situation like no other. Those who previously felt alienated and pushed to one side experienced a fresh wave of energy and mobilized in large numbers. Meacham points out that even David Duke of the KKK said he would vote for Trump. You know the situation isn’t so good when you hear things like that.Fear and hate have been prevalent in US history before. Still, rather than committing it to the history books and allowing it to remain there, it’s a far better idea to use these situations as yardsticks to avoid. Such periods may be turbulent, but they can be survived. One positive is that the population will always speak up for what is right. People will keep fighting for better days ahead. We need to join the fight and allow our voices to be heard.
In this summary, you will learn about some notable events in US history and how they still affect modern-day America. Perhaps understanding history a little better will allow more eyes to open to potential mistakes in the here and now.
second KEY POINT
Whenever a significant change happens, it’s rarely down to those in power. The background often stems from people mobilizing and making noise.Having the bravery to stand up for what you believe in isn’t easy. You will never find that 100% of people will agree with you, and you may open yourself up to major disagreements with those around you, but it’s always better than staying quiet and thinking, ‘what if.’In the history of America, we have seen time and time again how change comes when people rise up and speak out. The women’s suffrage movement is one such example. It may have taken many years to be heard and taken seriously, but the change was made with a commitment to the cause and perseverance. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, and Susan B. Anthony were the three founders of the movement who refused to be silenced. Had they not been brave and pushed through boundaries, perhaps women would still be denied the right to vote even today.Sojourner Truth was an activist who refused to be silenced even though speaking out was extremely dangerous for her. Having been born into slavery, she escaped and became an inspiration for countless others. By using her voice and refusing to bow to extreme pressure, she pushed for not only the rights of women but the abolishment of slavery.
