first KEY POINT

We need to give back to society

We all belong to our society, but more importantly, our society belongs to us. The majority of us do not realize that the way we treat our society is the way it treats us in return. When we view our environment negatively, we’ll always struggle to do anything notable. This same thing applies to our lives. When we fail to see the good in people, it becomes quite difficult for us to do anything good for them. Our existence is not separated from our environment. Society determines a lot of things in our lives, most especially who we grow up to be. Our lives revolve around what we make of our societies, which is why we must take responsibility.

When we give back to society, we build a life that will sustain us for a long time.

Giving back to society involves loving people, creating good memories, celebrating the lives of loved ones — alive or dead — and accepting reality. In this summary, through the story of Chelsea Handler, we’ll find out why it’s important to view life from different angles, and the dangers of living selfishly.

second KEY POINT

Living a comfortable life is not all there is to life

There was a period in Chelsea's life when the pursuit of fame, significant success, and wealth was her primary motivation for striving for more, but soon she found herself exhausted and ashamed by the meaninglessness of it all. At the age of forty-two, she had no kids, no husband, and no responsibilities — just a TV show on Netflix and whatever else she felt like doing. She felt she wasn’t trapped, stuck, or dependent on anyone else, and that she was free to be herself. Most of us subscribe to this same lifestyle, thinking we’ve got it all figured out, but we don’t.As an active listener of political matters, Chelsea had the inspiring hope that the United States would elect its first female president during her time. Along with more than half the world’s population, however, she was baffled by how, in today's world, people ended up electing Trump. She wondered why Americans appeared to have forsaken basic decency. It turns out that most of us suffer from what she suffered from — we’re too busy living in our fantasy that we fail to grasp reality. After a few years of earning more money and living a contented life, Chelsea came to realize that she was not taking into account the reality of her entitlement. She had become an elitist, and she started seeing life through the lenses of those she hated. This realization hurt her because she hated having those thoughts. She resented this insight because it triggered a profound change in her perspective. She came to see that while she had made a name for herself by being brutally honest with others, she had been lying to herself the whole time. Now that she was aware of this situation, she knew she had to do something about it.While she read Viktor Frank's book titled “Man’s Search for Meaning,” she encountered a line that changed her life forever. It read: “it did not matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us.” Many of us have never considered what life expects from us; instead, we've primarily focused on what we expect from life.
