first KEY POINT

In the fight against racism, black people bear the brunt

Racism can be subtle or loud, but it hurts the victim either way. It affects every area of life, making it difficult for Black people to feel motivated. Many Black workers earn less because of their skin color, while others have to settle for less.Cicely Tyson discovered early that Black actresses always received ridiculous roles that portrayed them negatively. She sought to change that but realized that the white producers, directors, and writers wouldn’t offer any help. She then called on other Black people to stand up, write their own stories, and direct and produce them. She also swore never to accept any role that belittled the Black woman. Her determination and the civil rights movement’s strength created a new awakening among the Black community. Black actors and actresses started demanding equal representation and pay while writing their own stories.

Unless Black people stand up to show their values to the world, they’ll always be seen according to stereotypes.

Many predominantly Black nations are painted as “backward” and “underdeveloped,” while Western countries as the pinnacle of civilization. This notion has to change, and the first step begins with changing the negative stereotypes attached to Black people.

The struggles Black people go through are unfair and horrific. Despite all the challenges, they fight for their dreams and freedom. The story of Cicely Tyson is full of obstacles that she overcame and reached enormous success. Stay tuned to learn more about her miraculous life.

second KEY POINT

Ending the ridiculous portrayal of Black actresses

Cicely Tyson had an acute foresight about the potential roles she could take. She immediately knew she should accept the offer if she felt tingling and exhilarated when she read the script. She could see the film’s success shining in her eyes. But when she felt unsettled while getting familiar with the role, as if her body refused to accept it, she understood that that offer wasn’t what she needed. When Tyson discovered that a film called Sounder was in the making, she received unequivocal assurance that she had to be a part of it. The film was under production in the 1970s and told a story of a family’s challenges during the Great Depression.Initially, the role offered her differed from what she would've chosen. The movie producers wanted her to play the part of the schoolteacher. Still, as she read the script, she felt confident she was meant to portray the mother, Rebecca, the wife of Nathan. Nathan was the family’s backbone, and Rebecca was the strong and steady heartbeat. Her interest in the role was founded on how Rebecca cared for her three children even as she took care of her husband. Tyson recognized the similarity with her mother and became drawn to the role through that story. After several unsuccessful attempts at taking up Rebecca’s part, Tyson was finally successful. Filming began in the spring of 1971. At that time, a tragedy took place that shook the entire country. The well-known and respected civil rights movement advocate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated.King’s death stirred a realization in Tyson. She realized that the Black man, muted over centuries by bigotry and racism, wouldn’t become a hero in his own story unless he died. There was also a similar bias against Black women. Their roles took two directions: they received supporting roles exclusively or got portrayed as hypersexual ladies whose only aim was getting into bed. Tyson made a conscious decision: she would use her profession as a platform — a stage to make her voice heard by carefully choosing her projects and portrayals.
