Summary of Innovation in Real Places

4.4 . 99 reviews

Short summary

The world is changing rapidly. Technology develops almost within the blink of an eye, and businesses need to stay up to date with everything to avoid falling behind, a difficult task, for sure. Innovation in Real Places argues that innovation doesn’t need to be large-scale. You don’t have to tap into the latest, all-singing, all-dancing technology to create something that will sell in large numbers. Neither should you invest millions in global reach to make a difference. It all comes down to focusing on innovation where it matters most — within local and national communities. Dan Breznitz puts forth a passionate case. As a bestselling author and university professor, he uses his experience as part of the University of Toronto Innovation Policy Lab to explore the continually changing world of economics and innovation. It seems there are more avenues for growth than most of us realize. “The growth policy that truly matters to people will not be decided in Brussels, Beijing, or Washington, but on the ground, by people from both the public and private sectors who work together daily to ensure that their communities prosper.” ~ Dan Breznitz

Technology opens doors, but it’s not the only way forward

Listen the first key point

The big technology companies, primarily based in Silicon Valley, have long been the industry leaders on the worldwide stage. We look toward them for new ideas, new products, and ways in which we can improve our lives and businesses for the better. It’s easy to understand why when you consider just how quickly technology develops. And with huge investment pouring in, it seems like there’s nothing we can’t do.

Of course, to use the most sophisticated technology means being able to afford it in the first place. You could argue that’s partly why large-scale businesses continue to get richer and smaller companies struggle so much. Technology costs money.

Dan Breznitz has long been an advocate for different types of innovation. He doesn’t think that we should always look toward international technology models and instead focus upon innovation we can create around us. Just because Apple is known to be the industry leader in computing, does that mean we always need to use Apple products? Just because Ford has long been known to be one of the best in the automotive industry, should we avoid any other company?
Technology allows us to dream the so-called impossible, but not everything needs to be copied or derived from Silicon Valley and its hugely successful tech companies.
Innovation in Real Places argues that we should look toward different types of development and assess what is best for us as a whole. Companies can make their own choices and focus upon their in-house innovation rather than always following a route set by Silicon Valley. The COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world and caused havoc over the last few years, and this has led us to question whether we should focus on development on quite so much of a global stage. In some cases, it just brings about more problems and roadblocks.

This summary will help you understand what innovation is and how it can be pulled back from a global reach and centered more locally and nationally. You’ll also realize that focusing solely on technology doesn’t necessarily have to be the way forward. By shifting our mindset away from the global aspect of the issue, perhaps we can empower local communities to create their own far-reaching success stories.
second key point

There is a fundamental difference between innovation and invention

One of the biggest misconceptions is the difference between innovation and invention; many people assume them to be one and the same. We believe we first need to develop a brand new idea to be innovative, something nobody has ever thought of before. But, that’s not the case. Instead, innovation is about developing an existing idea, working to make something that’s already around into something better.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

In today’s world, we rarely have time. Between our jobs, our families are social obligations, when do we have time to grow and develop ourselves? Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
