How I Replaced 20 Minutes of Scrolling with Daily Learning

A programmer's simple system for turning morning scroll time into consistent learning with book summaries and habit tracking.

I'm a programmer, and like most people, I used to spend about 20 minutes each morning scrolling through my phone after breakfast. Social media, news feeds, random content, nothing that actually stuck with me. It was just automatic.

Over the last year, I've completely changed that habit by using Headway, and it's made a real difference.Β

I've been changing my habits to do what I want instead of scrolling without realizing that my life is passing by. It's helped me replace 20 minutes of scrolling with something that actually gives me ideas and knowledge.

The hardest part: Breaking automatic scrolling

One of my hobbies is photography, and I upload a picture every day. Part of the inspiration comes from Instagram and TikTok.

What I didn't realize was that opening one of those apps took seconds, but I'd be there for half an hour without noticing.Β

Even when I tried to change, my brain was already hardwired to reach for them. The muscle memory was so strong that I'd unlock my phone intending to do one thing and find myself scrolling without even realizing I'd opened the app.

That was my biggest obstacle. I needed those apps for my photography work, but opening them was like falling into a black hole.

My morning learning routine: What worked for me

After waking up and having breakfast, I start with learning. It's my pause to think. Sometimes it's not possible, like on weekends or holidays, so I use any small free moment I can find instead. Rather than scrolling, I open a learning app and keep my daily streak going.

It took a month before opening Headway after breakfast felt automatic, rather than something I had to remind myself to do. It was hard to let go of the automatism inside my brain.

Even today, after my morning learning routine, if I'm looking for something or just checking that my pictures are uploaded, I have to be mindful of what I'm doing in that app. Otherwise, I could be there longer than I'd like.

The shift was straightforward. I just redirected the time I was already spending on my phone. The streak element proved important. It gave me a reason to keep going on days when I didn't feel particularly motivated.

Here's a quick snapshot of my morning routine for context:

  • Clarity first: I do "morning pages" in my own style (or I'll think things through) while reviewing Todoist and my notebook to map out the day.

  • Learning block: As a programmer, I keep two learning tracks going: technical (LeetCode and Codecademy) and growth (Headway and Cosmo).

  • Night reading: At night, I usually read a little about any topic that interests me at the moment.

The morning pages help me clear my head and plan the day. Then comes the learning block. I split it between technical skills for work and broader topics for personal growth. This balance keeps me sharp professionally while expanding how I think about other things.

How Headway book summaries replaced doomscrolling

Most mornings, I try to finish one book summary. And here's where Headway fits in.

The best way to learn the key points of a book is to judge it by its content and not by its cover, so that you can read it later.Β

Or put it another way: Headway helps me learn a book's key ideas fast and decide which ones are worth reading in full.

I wanted to read more widely, but didn't have time to commit to every interesting book. Summaries let me grasp a book's core ideas quickly, in the same 20 minutes I used to spend scrolling.Β

Some books I realize aren't worth my time. Others I add to my list for deeper reading because I know they're actually valuable.

A long time ago, I read 'Atomic Habits,' but I've forgotten most of it since then. With Headway, I had the opportunity to revisit just the key points, and there was something that helped me a lot, which I even highlighted:

"Did you know? According to James Clear, a daily improvement or regression of 1% will leave you 37 times better or worse at the end of the year."

And that's what I am looking forward to, getting 1% better daily, and part of this journey is with Headway. I can learn key points from different books every day, and when they resonate with me, as 'Atomic Habits' did, I will use them straight away.

Twenty minutes might not seem like much, but it compounds.

The top four app features that built my daily habit

I use the Plans.Β

Usually, I'm working on self-improvement or improving my skills to get better at my work. After three or four of these plans, I pick a completely different one to learn something new, like the "Uncover Fiction" plan, so that my brain can make new connections and I can learn better.

I just follow the plans because they have action points, quizzes, and recaps. The recaps are probably one of the best features!Β

I usually try to take the quiz the next day, so I have one day to memorize it and another to remember it.

Here's how I use Headway's features throughout my day:

  1. Growth Plans for structured learning: I focus on self-improvement and work skills, then switch to something completely different after three or four plans. The action points, quizzes, and recaps keep me on track.

  2. Listen tab for morning summaries: I use the 15-minute summaries as part of my morning routine. The ability to switch narrators is useful β€” some voices just work better for certain types of content. When I'm coding and need background focus, the ambient sounds help too.

  3. Before Bed mode at night: At night, I usually read a little about any topic that interests me at the moment, and that's when the "Before Bed" mode comes in handy with its calming audio.

  4. Shorts for those in-between moments: The Shorts feature is what really replaced my scrolling habit. It's swipeable content, like TikTok, but actually educational β€” quick ideas from books, facts, visual infographics, and quizzes.Β

When I only have five minutes, Shorts gives me that same scroll-through-content feeling, but I'm actually learning something. It scratches the same itch as social media without the guilt.

The two-day rule: Preventing habit collapse

I love the two-day rule: if you miss a habit or goal for one day, make sure to do it the next day.Β

So, at the end, I am focused on doing it daily, and if I miss a day, I will make up for that missed learning the next day.

This approach keeps me from spiraling when life gets chaotic. Missing one day doesn't break the system β€” it just means tomorrow's priority is clear.

Trading information overload for clarity: What's changed in my daily life

My mind is less tired and less overwhelmed by information I don't want. I can focus on what I actually want to learn.

The best time to learn is in the mornings, as it seems to be the best time to get the most information.

That mental clarity alone made the habit worth it. Instead of starting my day drowning in random information from social feeds, I'm deliberately filling my mind with ideas.

I've read two books on mindfulness because of recommendations I found through the app.

'Focus' is probably one of the best books I've read lately, so good that just thinking about it makes me excited, because I have a lot of good memories of it.

My progress beyond the books:

Besides full books, I've also researched topics that looked super interesting, like bed routines (to get the best sleep), new habit techniques (to keep up on the learning path), better planning, and bullet journaling (another big improvement these days, having more clarity in the morning).

And that's exactly how the system is supposed to work. The summaries aren't meant to replace books β€” they're a filter.Β

They help me identify which books deserve my full attention and which concepts I can explore elsewhere.Β

'Focus' became one of my favorites because the Headway summary showed me it was worth the investment.

Five practical steps to hijack your scrolling reflex

The system works because I'm not trying to add new time to my day. I'm just using the time I was already spending more intentionally.

And I've kept it flexible. I'm not rigid about it being exactly after breakfast or exactly 20 minutes. When I have a free moment and would normally scroll, I learn instead.Β

If you're interested in building something like this, here's what worked for me:

  1. Notice when you automatically scroll: For me, it was after breakfast. That became my window for learning instead. Even if you need social media for work, like I do for photography, you can still redirect most of your scroll time.

  2. Start small and daily: I try to finish one book summary each morning, but even five minutes counts. Consistency matters more than volume. Learning gives you two things over time: more to talk about with people, and new interests you didn't know you had.

  3. Use the streak system as motivation: Instead of scrolling, I open a learning app and keep my daily streak. Watching that number go up creates a simple but effective habit loop.

  4. Anchor it to something you already do: I anchor my learning to breakfast. That makes it automatic β€” I don't have to think about when to do it.

  5. Use the 2-day rule when you slip: If you miss a day, make sure to do it the next day. This practice keeps one missed day from becoming a week.

The flexibility of being able to learn while doing other things β€” that's what makes Headway indispensable for me.

My results after just one year with Headway

I've been changing my habits to do what I want instead of scrolling without realizing that our lives are passing by:

  1. It's helped me replace 20 minutes of scrolling with something that gives me ideas and knowledge.

  2. I've absorbed ideas from 58 book summaries so far (and counting), maintained consistent technical practice, discovered books like 'Focus' that genuinely shifted how I think, and completely changed how I use my phone.

  3. More than the knowledge itself, I've gained more control over where my attention goes.

You don't need more time in your day. You just need to be intentional about the time you're already spending.Β

"Stop scrolling while getting value," that's the summary. It's been working for me for a year now, and I'm still doing it.
