Why work-life balance is a rhythm, not a formula

According to the American Institute of Stress, 83% of US workers suffer from work-related stress, and burnout costs employers an estimated $125–190 billion in healthcare spending annually.

For many professionals, the answer isn't working less, it's learning how to protect recovery time within a full schedule.

For me, work-life balance isn’t about daily symmetry. It’s about finding equilibrium over time. I often work in intense bursts, followed by slower periods when I reset. That rhythm works for me, as long as I’m conscious about not letting the ‘life’ side slip for too long.

Headway fits in as a way to keep my brain ticking during both the busy and quieter phases. It’s an easy, low-effort way to stay inspired or shift gears when I need a quick reset.

How I make time for learning

I schedule it.

It sounds simple, but in reality, it means accepting that client demands don’t always leave room for deep work or study, so I use the in-between moments.

The Headway app is a great tool that helps me fit in learning over breakfast or reset and change gear between projects. In addition to Headway, I’ve also started keeping a list of courses and learning ideas to dip into when time allows. It’s about being deliberate, not perfect.

Learning in small moments that add up

Certain books have left a lasting impression on how I approach time and focus. 'Make Time' by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky gave me a helpful framework. It reinforced the idea that you have to design your time proactively — especially if you’re working around others’ schedules, as I often am. Jim Kwik’s 'Limitless' also stood out for its ideas around focus and learning efficiency.

That’s the power of bite-sized learning.

It fills the gaps.

It’s not a replacement for deeper learning, but it keeps the momentum going when I don’t have the bandwidth for a full course or book. It’s also great for trying out new ideas quickly before committing to a deeper dive.

While I haven’t noticed a dramatic shift in stress levels, I enjoy the sense of progress it gives me. Even on the busiest days, using Headway makes me feel like I’m still doing something meaningful with my time.

Fueling growth — without overwhelm

Sometimes, a summary needs to sink in before I can apply it naturally. I’ll often revisit the ones that resonated. The ideas don’t always stick the first time but influence how I think — especially around productivity, mindset, or leadership.

A good summary at the right time can give me a small mindset shift or spark a new way of thinking. It’s not always about applying something immediately — it’s about staying sharp and feeding my curiosity.

What surprised me most was the ease with which I could explore a new topic. Whether it’s something directly related to work or just out of curiosity, like finance or family, it gives me something meaningful without feeling like a big commitment. If someone mentions a relevant or impactful book, I often search for it on Headway and dig in if time allows. I’ve then, on occasion, bought the book to get the full picture.

I’ll keep using it as part of my ‘in-between’ toolkit — for those times when I’ve got 15 minutes but not enough brainpower for deep focus.

If I had to offer one tip for someone struggling with work-life balance, it would be this: figuring out what balance means for you is the key.

Don’t assume someone else’s routine will work for your life or energy levels.

Try different things, see how they make you feel, and be honest about when you need a break and when it’s time to push.
