Summary of Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race

4.7 . 16822 reviews

Short summary

The numerous claims by people that Britain is not a racist society is far from true. Like every other European nation, racism against Blacks or another ethnic minority truly exists. Although it can be argued that the level of racism has reduced substantially, the systemic structures put in place by society has made it difficult still for Black people to live a free, comfortable life outside their nations. There’s no denying the true intent of the many organizations that have sprung up over the years to get rid of racism, but unless we all make a demand for a better society, we’ll always fall short of reaching our goals. Contained in this summary are the realities Black people face, the truth about white privilege, and how we must all come together to tear down the veil of oppression and racism. Reni Eddo-Lodge is an award-winning writer and journalist. She has written for bigwigs like Daily Telegraph, Guardian, Independent, the New York Times, and The Voice. She’s a successful blogger and an advocate for the movement that treats Black women better. "White privilege is an absence of the consequences of racism. An absence of structural discrimination, an absence of your race being viewed as a problem first and foremost." ~ Reni Eddo-Lodge

first key point

Dismantling the systemic structural prejudice against people of color is an important fight that should be in the hearts of everyone

Listen the first key point

The fight against racism should not be left to Blacks alone, it should be a collective effort from people of all colors. The first step in getting rid of oppression is to accept that it exists in the first place. White British people must understand and agree that racism still exists, and only then can we move forward with fighting oppression.

Black history doesn’t get enough representation, and the media needs to do better with the portrayal of black people to the world. Black does not in any way represent evil, and unless this narrative is changed, people will keep on associating the black color with things that are negative.

It’s never too late to join the fight against racism, and even though it’s going to be very tough, victory is possible once we remain steadfast in our pursuit for a world free of segregation along racial lines.

Reni Eddo–Lodge, through her firsthand experience, has painted the true picture of our society for us. She has exposed the ills, thereby giving us a chance to see our mistakes and correct them. If you intend to know more about racism, and why it’s sometimes draining to talk to white people about it, then this is the right piece.
The mess we are living in is a deliberate one. If it was created by people, it can be dismantled by people, and it can be rebuilt in a way that serves all, rather than a selfish, hoarding few. ~ Reni Eddo–Lodge
second key point

Understanding the advocacy of Blacks requires a compromise that allows both Blacks and whites to understand each other’s perspective without bias

Britain today, like many countries across the world, is still racist. A lot of people might try to deny it, but racism still exists in the country. Unless you are a part of the privileged majority who don’t suffer for the color of their skin, you have to admit that people of different races are not treated the same.

Headway is the answer! No longer accumulating books I never read. With Headway, I initially chose the areas important to me such as productivity, time management, etc., and each day I'm provided several book summaries from which I devote 20 minutes or more each day reading. All of this on my phone! My life has improved with Headway. Truly my most useful app.

Headway is an excellent app that gives you that time it gives you those little snippets of information that you need to direct your focus in on your life. Headway gives you a chance to find out the meat of a book that you might want to purchase and read or listen to in-depth without wasting a lot of time trying to figure out is this book for me? I highly recommend the app.

I've gotten multiple books out of the library with the intent to read them, but always have a hard time finding the time. This app has helped me finally be able to get to them. Summarized, yes, and thank goodness too! Just short enough I can finish one on my way picking kids up from school/practice, or while I'm cooking dinner. I can't wait to listen to them over the summer when we visit the beach!

It amazed me! There is the possibility to highlight the most important points of each book and instantly translate unfamiliar vocabulary. With the ability to review the searched words. It's a great way to learn more about English as well. The price is great.

I’m enjoying what I’m learning on headway.each summary comes with quotes at the end which you can save to help you remember key points. You can listen or read, I’ve found that reading puts me to sleep before I can finish but the listening feature keeps me engaged and I can finish in a brief amount of time if not one session.

Exactly what I need! I always have booklist to read, but can't committed enough to finish/start bc of too much pages. Headway is really helpful and concise with their summary. What I love the most is that the essence of the book is well crafted, so I don't only read the key points, but also there's the story and how personality of the author still well shown through the summary. Well done!
